C̕awak ʔqin Forestry Statement on Proposed Old Growth Deferrals

Earlier today, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development announced the proposed old growth deferrals based on the advice and recommendations of the independent Old Growth Technical Advisory Panel established by the B.C. Government in June 2021.

C̕awak ʔqin Forestry (TFL 44 LP) has been briefed on the plan, including proposed old growth deferrals on TFL 44 and on the ḥahuułi of the Huu-ay-aht Ḥaw̓iiḥ (Huu-ay-aht Traditional Territory).

C̕awak ʔqin Forestry equity partner, Huu-ay-aht First Nations, has been advised by the BC government that no further deferrals will be implemented within its ḥahuułi without Huu-ay-aht’s prior agreement arrived at through government-to-government engagement. Huu-ay-aht is engaged in a two-year Hišuk ma c̕awak integrated resource planning process that will guide future forest, resource, and land-use decisions by Huu-ay-aht within the ḥahuułi. This Indigenous-based forest and resource management planning approach is the path Huu-ay-aht has chosen and will guide all decisions related to further deferrals.

C̕awak ʔqin Forestry supports and endorses Huu-ay-aht’s statement on today’s announcement.
